This member of the Orchidaceae family was given this name by John Lindley in 1831. It is found in the heights (1600-2600m) of central and southern Mexico, growing as an epiphyte on branches or in moss on rocks with lots water and some sun. The pseudobulbs grow to three centimetres in diameter, the leaves reaches 40 centimetres and the inflorescence with the pink flowers can reach 90 centimetres.
