This member of the
Amaryllidaceae family was described by John Gilbert Baker in 1878. It is
found in Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, and in Free
State, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It grows
in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can
grow to twelve centimetres or more, the leaves to 30 centimetres.
The flowers are from white to light pink with pink bands.
"Crinum" comes from the Greek "Krinon",
which means white lily, or Crinum is derived from the Greek "Krinos",
meaning trailing hair or comet tail, referring to the flower. |
