This member of the Juncaceae family was described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. It's found all over the temperate world, growing in acid or polluted soil with lots of water and sun. The bulb get 5 centimetres, the hollow leaves up to one meter. The flowers are brown to yellow, and it can also be reproduced by dividing the bulbs.

The Latin name effusus means: let out (the flowers).

They can live for up to sixty years, usually on acid soil. 

It need rather high humidity!
