This member of the Cactaceae family was given this name by E. F. Anderson in 1999. It is found at high altitude at San Juan and Mendoza, Argentina, growing in grit with little water and lots of sun. The tuberous root will grow  rather large, the whole plant will only reach 15 centimetres in height. The flowers are greenish yellow to pale rose.
