This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by William Henry Harvey ex Baker in 1871. It is found on the Eastern Cape, South Africa, growing in peat or well drained soil with some water and little to some sun. The bulb will grow up to seven centimetres in diameter, the leaves will get 45 centimetres long. The flowers are pale yellow to dark pink.

Named after the German patron of botany, August Ferdinand Graf von Veltheim.
