This member of the Orchidaceae family was given this name by Harry Bolus in 1889. It is found in central and southern Africa, growing in grass and woodlands' rich soil, clay or sandy soil with lots of water and some to lots of sun. The plant can grow to 30 centimetres with a flower stalk that can reach 120 centimetres, full of yellow flowers. The corm can grow to 3,5 centimetres in diameter.

The genera name means 'good or beautiful plume'. The species name means 'showy, spectacular'.


The bulbs will form under ground, but can be raised.
