This member of the Geraniaceae family was given this name by
Ulrich Meve and Elizabeth M. Marais in 2000. It it is endemic to the
quartz fields of the Knersvlakte in the northern part of the Western
Cape in South Africa, growing in the well drained quartz gravel with
some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to two
centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to seven centimetres in
height. The
flowers are from white over cream to light pink with red markings.
The genera name from Greek;
pelargos; 'stork' for the ripening fruits, which resembles the
bills of storks. The species name means 'live in quarts' as a rock
dweller.
This is a winter-grower,
flowering in the late winter. |
