This member of the Geraniaceae family was given this name by Robert Sweet in 1824. It is found in eastern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The swollen roots can grow to four or five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are greenish and pink.

The genera name from Greek; pelargos; 'stork' for the ripening fruits, which resembles the bills of storks. The species name means 'split petals', and they sure are.
