This member of the Orchidaceae family was given this name by Wes E. Higgins in 1998. It is found in Costa Rica and Panama, growing as an epiphyte in open rain- and cloud forests with lots of water and some sun. The pseudobulbs can grow to eight centimetres in diameter and 20 centimetres long. The leaves grows up to 50 centimetres and the inflorescence to 65 centimetres, bearing the many greenish-white, dark maroon and pink flowers.

The genera name from the Greek prostheke; 'appendix', referring to the appendage on the back of the gynostemium. The species name means 'the shape of a prism, angular, with flat sides, and of nearly uniform size throughout - seeds'.
