This member of the Basellaceae family was described by Joseph Marie Henry Alfred Perrier de la Bāthie in 1950. It is found in the central and eastern part of Madagascar. It has a subterranean caudex/rhizome which can grow to fifteen centimetres, the vines will reach for eight meters. It grows between rocks in grit or other well drained soil with some water and some sun.

Also seen as a member of the Chenopodiaceae family.
