This member of the Moraceae family was described by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1894. It is found in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, growing in well drained peat with some to lots of water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow up to 4,5 centimetres, the stem 50 centimetres height. The flowers are green.

The genera is named after Theodor Dorsten, 16th century German botanist and medical professor at Marburg. The species is named after John Buchanan, 1821-1903, a Scottish clergyman, living in South Africa.
