This member of the Amaryllidaceae
family was described by William Herbert in 1831. It is found in
Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some
sun. The bulb will grow to four centimetres in diameter, the leaves
to 30 centimetres. The flowers are white with pink edges. The plant
can be reproduced both by seeds and bulbs.
The genera is named for its
spectacular flowers. The species for its rather big flowers.
