This member of the Hyacinthaceae
family was described by Nicolaas Joseph von Jacquin in 1797. It is found in
Lesotho and South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with
some water and lots of sun. The bulb grow to four centimetres in
diameter, the grass-like leaves to 20 centimetres. The flowers are
white, and besides from seeds, the plant can be reproduced by bulbs.
The
genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala;
'milk'. The species name means 'leaves like Juncus; rush'.
*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae
is
now part of
the Asparagaceae. |
