This member of the Dioscoreaceae family was given this name by John Gilbert Baker in 1889. It is found in South Africa, growing in the forests in a rich but well drained soil with some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres and the vines can reach five meter.

This is a winter grower.
