This member of the Periplocaceae* family is the only member on Madagascar. It was given this name by Jens Klackenberg in 1999. The stems will reach for two meters, the caudex to at least ten centimetres, and the flowers are pale yellow.

The genera name from Greek: ischnos; 'dry' and -lepis; 'scale', which might refer to the filiform slender corona segments. The species name means 'grass-like leaves'.

*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Periplocaceae is now part of the Apocynaceae.
