This member of the Alliaceae family was
given this name by Federico Philippi in 1896. It is found in central
Chile, growing in a rich and well
drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulbs grow to
two centimetres, the grass like leaves to 20 or even 40 centimetres
as well as the inflorescence. The magnificent flowers are blue to
violet and white with a greenish yellow centre.
The genera name from the Greek
leukos; 'white' and koryne 'club'; referring to the white
staminodes. The species name as it originates from Coquimbo, Chile.
