This member of the Caryophyllaceae family was given this name by Alexander Carl Heinrich Braun in 1843. It originates from the south-eastern part of north America. It grows in a well-drained soil with little to some water and little to some sun. The flower stands will reach for 60 centimetres, the flowers are bright red. It can only be reproduced by seeds.

The genera name from the Greek melas; 'black' and andros; 'man', referring to the dark stamen. The species name for its occurrence in Virginia, U.S.A.
