This member of the Orchidaceae family was given this name by Antonio Josť Cavanilles in 1793. It is found in Southern Europe, growing in grassland in a well drained soil with some to lots of  water and some to lots of sun. The bulbs can grow to two centimetres, the plant up to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are yellow, bye-gray and maroon. The pollen is deposit on the abdomen of the bees.
