This member of the Anacardiaceae family was given this name by Paul Carpenter Standley in 1923. It is found in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Mexico, growing in a slightly rich and well drained soil with some to much of water and lots of sun. The stem can grow to 50 centimetre in diameter, the tree from six to nine metres in height. 

The genera name means 'round wing'. The species name 'astringent'.
