This member of the Dioscoreaceae family was given this name by Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck in 1846. It is found in southern part of western Australia, growing in a rich soil of a gravel mix with some to lots of water and some to lots of sun. I estimate the size of the caudex to around two centimetres (I started growing one to find out), the vines can reach two or even three metres. The flowers are bright yellow.

Dioscorea is named after Pedianos Dioscorides, a Greek physician if the 1st century A.D. The species name referring to the shape of the leaves, hastifolia is the Latin words hasta, meaning 'spear', and folium, meaning 'leaf'.
