This member of the Bombacaceae* family was given this name by José Luis Fernández Alonso in 2003. It is only found on Cuba, growing in a well drained soil with quite some water and some to lots of sun. The stem can grow to 80 or even 180 centimetres in diameter, the tree will reach a height of twelve or even 25 metres. The flowers are large and white to cream.

*This family might been incorporated in the Malvaceae family now. Sub-family: Bombacoideae.
