This member of the Asteraceae family was given this name by Charles Jeffrey in 1986. It is found in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 7,5 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 45 or even 60 centimetres in height. The flowers are yellow or bright orange for S. t. pubescens.

The genera name is a combination name derived from Solanum and Senecio; referring to a daisy-like plant with tuberous roots. The species name for the swollen root.
