This member of the Aizoaceae family was
given this name by
Martin Heinrich Gustav Schwantes in 1926. It's from southern
South Africa, growing in well-drained
soil with some water and sun. The caudex grows to 30 centimetres, the stems to 60 centimetres
high. The flowers are white to pink, and
besides seeds, it can be also
reproduced by cuttings.The
genera name from the Greek thirix; 'hair' and diadema;
'band around the head', referring to the crown of bristles on the
leaf tips. The species name for the bulbous roots.
Seen as a Facioidaceae in IPNI, and also
as a Mesembryanthemaceae.
