This member of the Cactaceae family was described by Adrian Hardy Haworth in 1819. It if found in Brazil an maybe up north to Mexico. It prefers well-drained soil, kept wet all-time during summer, a rather high air-humidity and not too much sun. The stems will grow to 20 centimetres in diameter, the hole plant reaches for up to 5 meters. The flowers are pink, the fruits quiet special for a cacti. It can be reproduced both by seeds and cuttings, which must be watered right away, or dried out for a week, but without leaves.

Pereskia: in the honour of the French astronomer Nicolas Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580-1637). grandifolia: of Latin grown, large and folium, leaves, in reference to the large leaves of the species.
