This member of the Montiaceae family was given this name by Alexander Morrison in 1912. It is found in Western Australia, growing in a well drained sandy or gritty soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to two centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to seven centimetres in height. The flowers are purple to pink with a white throat..

The genera was named for Jean Louis Calandrini, 1703-1758, a Genevan botanist. The species name is from Latin; schisto; 'devided' and -rhiza; 'root'.
