This member of the
Zamiaceae family
was given this name by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel in 1848. It is found in
Querétaro, Hidalgo and San Luis Potosí in Mexico, growing in a well drained
limestone mix with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to
fifteen centimetres above ground, 50 centimetres in total, and it reach
20 in diameter. The entire plant
to can grow to 100 centimetres in height. The male cones are brown
while the female are grey.
The genus name from the Greek ceras, meaning 'horn', which refers to the paired,
spreading horny projections on the male and female sporophylls, and
azaino; 'pinecone' of all species. The species name
from Latin; latus; 'broad' and folium '-leaved'. |
