This member of the Euphorbiaceae family was given this name by Peter René Oscar Bally and Susan Carter in 1982. It is found in the El Barta Plains in central Kenya, growing in a well drained sandy or stony soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to seven centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 90 centimetres in height. The flowers are bright yellow while the seeds are purplish.

The genera is named after Euphorbos, the Greek physician of King Juba II of Numidia. The species is named after the Samburu National Reserve, where it is found.
