This member of the Euphorbiaceae family was given this name by Werner Rauh in 1988. It is found on Madagascar, growing in a well drained soil with little to some water and lots of sun. The swollen root and stem can grow to five centimetres, the whole plant can grow to 20 centimetres in height and a bit wider. The flowers are greenish yellow.

The genera name; Euphorbia dates back to the first century BC, where King Juba II of Mauritania used it in a reference to his doctor, Euphorbos, and that name was kept as a generic name by Carl von Linnaeus. The species name from after the area it is found in: Toliara.
