This member of the Euphorbiaceae family was given this name by Otto Stapf in 1900. It is found in Malawi and Tanzania, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres, the stem up to 80 centimetres height. The flowers are pale green.

The genera name from the Greek monos; 'one' and -aden; 'gland', referring to the solitary gland. The species name means 'smooth' for the leaves.
