This member of the Gesneriaceae family was given this name by Hans Joachim Wiehler in 1975. It is found around Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, growing in a rich soil with some to lots of water and some sun. The caudex, which will form on cuttings, can grow to eight centimetres or more in diameter. The branches reaches 60 centimetres. The flowers are bright red, but should also come in lighter nuances of red ore even crème coloured.

The genera is named after Wilhelm Sinning,1792–1874, a gardener of the Botanische Gärten der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. The species name means 'big leaved'.
