This dioecious member of the Menispermaceae family was given this name by John Miers in 1851. It is found in China, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Thailand, growing in a well drained bur rich soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 35 centimetres in diameter, 30 kilos, the entire plant to four metres in height. The flowers are greenish yellowish to reddish yellowish.

I fail to figure why the name is not Stephania rotunda, Lour. 1790.

The genera name after Stephan Ladislaus Endlicher, 1804-1849, an Austrian botanist who formulated a major system of plant classification. The species name referring to its hairless appearance.
