This member of the Solanaceae
family was described by Charles Louis Constant Pauquy in 1824. It is found on the Canary
Islands; Tenerife and Santa Ursula, growing in a well drained soil
with some water and some
to lots of sun. I think the swollen stem will grow up to 30
centimetres in diameter and the plant can reach for up to five meters. The flowers
are pale green.
The genera name
is thought to have been named in honour of Henry Witham, a British
geologist and writer on fossil botany beginning in 1830. The species
name is thought to be after a great saint Ashutosh.
Charles Louis Constant Pauquy did not write why he gave it
these names.
Subfamily:
Solanoideae Tribe: Solaneae.
