This member of the Bombacaceae*
family was described by Henri
Ernest Baillion in 1890. It is found in south to
Madagascar from the south almost to the north. It preferring a well
drained soil with some to lots of water and lots of sun. The stem
can grow up to six meters in diameter, the whole plant will grow
from ten to 40 meters high. The flowers which occurs from November
to January are yellow and red.

The genera is named after the French naturalist Michel Adanson,1727-1806.
The species name is the local
name for the tree.
