Adenium obesum subsp. boehmianum, G.D.Rowley |
This member of the Apocynaceae
family was described by Hans
Schinz in 1888. It is found in the western part of southern
Africa, from Namibia into Angola, growing in a well drained soil with
some water and lots of sun. The caudex disappears with age. The
plant can grow up to two metres or more.
The
genera is named
after the Yemen city of Aden.
The species name after G.
R. Böhmer, a German botanist. The subspecies; swazicum
is the former Adenium
swazicum Otto Stapf 1907, now described by Gordon
Douglas Rowley in 1974. It is found in the eastern southern Africa:
Eastern Swaziland, South Africa and Mozambique. It has a bigger
caudex; up to one meter in diameter.
Those I found had not really a
caudex, but it might have been young plants - all of them. They were
found with several hundred meters apart in several populations. |
