This member of the Ericaceae family was given this name by Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1876. It is found in Assam, Bangladesh, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Khasi of India, growing around 2100 metres height as an epiphyte with some water and some sun. The caudex might grow to five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 60 centimetres in height. The flowers are pale to deep red.

The genera name from 'agapétos' meaning 'lovely', referring to the flower. The species name means 'upside-down egg-shaped'.
