This member of the Aloaceae* family was given this name by Philip Miller in 1768. It is found in the southern Cape Province, South Africa, growing in wintertime in a acid, well drained soil with little water and some sun. The plant can grow up to 4,5 meters with a stem of 35 centimetres, the flowers are yellow and pink to red.

The genera name is the ancient Greek and Latin name. The species name; plicatilis means 'fan-like'. 

')Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016,  Aloaceae is now part of the Asphodelaceae.
