This member of the Begoniaceae family was given this name by
Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1868. It is found
in Congo,
South Africa, Tanzania, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique,
Eswatini, Tanzania, Zambia, Zaïre and Tanzania, growing in a well drained but
rich soil with
quite some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to six
centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 50 centimetres in
height. The
flowers are orange over apricot to pink. The genera name after Michel
Bégon, 1638-1710, once a governor of French Haiti. The species
name honours Dr. Peter C. Sutherland, 1822-1900, an English plant
collector. |
