This dioecious member of the Zamiazeae family was given this name by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel in 1848. It is found in  Belize, Guatemala, and southern Mexico, growing in a well drained but rich soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres in diameter, 200 centimetres high, the entire plant to four metres in height. The cones are greenish to brown.

The genus name from the Greek ceras, meaning 'horn', which refers to the paired, spreading horny projections on the male and female sporophylls, and azaino; 'pinecone' of all species. The species name for its large appearance.
