This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was described by Julius Friedrich Wilhelm Bosse in 1859. It is found in the forests of Kwazulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga in South Africa and Eswatini, growing in a drained but rich soil with quite some water and little sun. The caudex will grow up to five centimetres in diameter, the whole plant will grow up to 70 centimetres in height. The flowers are from red over orange to yellow.

Clivia in honour of Charlotte Percy (née Clive), Duchess of Northumberland,1787–1866. The species name means 'cinnabar red', as some of the flowers are.
