This member of the Araliaceae family was given this name by Rudolf Georg Strey in 1975. It is found in southern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The fast developing round caudex tend to disappear by age, but can reach a diameter of 20 centimetres. The plant can grow from two to four meters in height.

The genera is named after Pierre Cusson, 1727-1783, a French physician, botanist and mathematician. The species is named after the small area it can be found in.
