This member of the Primulaceae family was given this name by Paul Friedrich August Ascherson in 1897. It is found between Benghazi and Derna in Cyrenaica, Libya, growing in a well drained limestone soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to fifteen centimetres or more. The leaves are large, up to ten centimetres wide. The flowers are pink - unless they are white, and then it is Cyclamen rohlfsianum fo. album Brian Frederick Mathew 2002.

The genera name from Greek kyklos: 'circle' referring to the rounded tubers. The species is named after Friedrich Gerhard Rohlfs, who discovered it in 1879.

Late summer into winter-grower.
