This dioecious member of the Zamiaceae family was given this name by Bernard Verdcourt in 1945. It is found in Limpopo in north-eastern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 30 or even 45 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 4,5 metres in height. The cones are brown.

The name Encephalartos is derived from the Greek: en meaning 'within', kephali meaning 'head' and artos meaning 'bread'. The species is named after Eugène Marais, 1871-1936, a  South African lawyer, naturalist, poet and writer, who discovered the plant.
