This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by Maarten Houttuyn in 1780. It is found in south-western South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The bulb will grow up to 15 centimetres in diameter, the whole plant reach for up to 25 centimetres. The flowers are orange.

The genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'. The species name originates from Latin: 'doubtful, doubt, hesitation, reservation, dubiety'.

*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
