This lovely little member of the
Hyacinthaceae family was described by Winsome Fanny Baker in 1873. It is found from
Namaqualand to Swellendam in the gravel of shallow
pockets on the rock faces. It only receives a little amount of
water, but lots of sun. The bulb will grow up to one centimetre in
diameter, the plant up to six centimetres height.
The
genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'.
The species name means 'many-leaved'.
*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae
is
now part of
the Asparagaceae. |
