This member of the Gesneriaceae family was described by William Philip Hiern in 1877. It is found in south-eastern Brazil, growing in a well drained soil with some water and little or no sun. The caudex can grow to 20 centimetres in diameter, the leaves reach for 30 centimetres in length. The flowers come from white over pink and red to blue. It can be reproduced both by the tiny seeds and leaf-cuttings.

The genera is named after Wilhelm Sinning,1792–1874, a gardener of the Botanische Gärten der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. The species name after the appearance of the flowers: 'handsome'.
