This member of the Sterculiaceae*
family was described by
William Botting Hemsley in 1894. It is from
the central part of South Africa, where it
grows in open forests with lots of water and some sun. It will grow to
ten meters with a trunk 35 centimetres in diameter. The flowers are
yellow with pink dots, and the plant can be reproduced both by seeds
and cuttings.
The genera name
after the Latin god; Sterculius. The species name from
Latin, mollusk; 'yielding a purple dye'.
*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Sterculiaceae is now part of the Malvaceae. |
