This member of the Menispermaceae family was given this name by Joseph Dalton Hooker and Thomas Thomsonin 1855. It is found in Andaman Islands, Assam, Bangladesh, East Himalaya, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nicobar Islands, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and now grown around the world, growing in a well drained but rich soil with some to lots of water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to six centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 20 metres in height. The flowers are yellow.

The genera from Latin tīna; 'wine-vessel' and Greek σπορά; sporá; 'sowing'  for the fruits. The species name from Latin; 'heart-leave'.
