This member of the Berberidaceae
family was given this name by Augustin Pyramus de Candolle in 1821.
It is found in the mountains of Japan, growing in a moist but well
drained soil with some to lots of light. The stem can grow to
seven centimetres, the whole plant can reach 2,5 meters in height.
The flowers are rather small, light yellow, and the fruits which
contains one seed are bright red. It can easily be reproduced by
both cuttings and seeds, and are tolerant to a wide range of
habitats.
It can be found as a garden
plant in North America, Europe and northern Asia.
Berberis thunbergii var.
atropurpurea is a natural occurring variation with read
leaves, especially in spring.
